Sat Nav App Android App Launched

Co-PilotThe Co-Pilot turn by turn navigation app has been launched for Android phones & is available for download now on Android market. What is interesting is that unlike the recently launched equivalents launched for iPhone which followed the monthly subsciption model this one is priced as a one off cost (though I’m sure updated maps would need to be purchased later if required).

The app is  priced at £22.60 for a single country eg UK or £52.16 for the whole of Europe which is not far off the cost of a map update for a TomTom go.

Although not confirmed for the UK the software also supports live services such as traffic.

For full details see the developer’s site

Firefox Anywhere

FirefoxShortly after announcing the release of Firefox 3.5, Mozilla’s also talking about an Android port for its mobile browser – codenamed Fennec.

Until recently, applications on Android ran on Google’s Java virtual machine. However, last week the Android Native Development Kit version 1.0 was released, which lets apps run natively in Android.

Desktop PC’s are dead, long live Laptops & Consoles

SmashedAs an Xbox playing Notebook owner & ex-pc gamer this Gizmodo article might just be true stating that traditional desktops & towers are in decline. If they’d stayed beige then all this could have been different, anyone agree?

Mark July 15th In Your Diary As “7″ day..

Windows LogoWhile the offer has come & gone in some other territories (well Japan anyway) due to limited availability , the cut price Windows 7 upgrade offer will begin on July 15th. Although the £50 Premium & £99 Pro offer is officially available until 14th August stock is somehow “limited” so presumably could be withdrawn earlier.

Amazon are taking emails for notification for when orders can be taken & presumably others including Microsoft themselves will be taking orders.

If you would rather have Windows 7 along with a new PC most manufacturers have announced their by a Vista PC now get a free (or almost free) upgrade in November. Good if you absolutely gotta have that new PC now.

Windows 7 is due to ship in October this year.

Palm Blocks Homebrew Software With Update

Palm PreWith the SDK not offically available yet some were excited that albeit via an email security hole Gizmodo reported last week that it was possible to install homebrew apps without “rooting” via a specially crafted email.

However this kind of flaw, & it is a flaw is just as easy to exploit in a bad way as it is good (Pre drive by virus anyone?)

New Euro Plug For All – The Future is Micro USB

Micro USB PlugThis little connector may notbe much t0 look at but those crazy Europeans Union types have stopped picking on browsers for long enough to get mobile manufacturers to agree on something sensible, which is to adopt the Micro USB socket as the standard connector for charging & syncing mobiles future mobile phones.

So thanks to this directive we could be carrying less chargers & cables around in future.

Nokia, Motorola, , Sony Ericsson, LG, NEC, RIM, Samsung and Apple are among those will be adopting the connector although I’m sure that Apple will need to keep it’s own connector in additon for compatibility.

Presumably this was chosen over the slightly larger but popular Mini USB to cater for the smallest of handset available.
